It is also the question that started us on the long journey of opening Hot Dog Collars. Our experience with pets started over 25 years ago with our first dog, Ruff. Yes, he barked a lot, and yes, a 3 year old named him. And even though he was a 7 pound Yorkie who was crazy enough to chase 1200 pound horses, we loved him. We wanted the best for Ruff, and we also wanted to enjoy every moment of pet ownership. This meant spoiling him and making it even more fun to see him bouncing down the hall towards us. We did this with fun neck wear and collars. See, it didn’t mean much to Ruff to have a brand new collar, but it meant a lot to our family. it made owning a pet even more enjoyable. After all, if we could get a laugh at a 7 pound dog wearing a spiked collar, then why couldn’t everyone else. And that was it, from that point on, Hot Dog Collars has been here to help you spoil your dog with some hot dog collars. After Ruff, came Wicket. Another small dog with a big heart. Wicket was a Brussels Griffon, just like the dog in As Good As It Gets (The late 90’s Jack Nicholson movie). Well, ok, as you can see from the picture, not exactly like that.

Since our opening, we have helped spoil thousands of pets. While the temptation is there to expand and make the most of our business, we like the fact that it is still family owned and operated. This allows us to keep a watchful eye on not only the quality of our products, but also the quality of our customer service. It was then that we realized that it’s really expensive to have me properly cared for. My mom and I wanted to come up with a solution for this problem. And she wanted to get back to one of her true passions – the love of animals. She did after all grow up on a farm in the Mid-west. She had lots of dogs before me (14 in all – I know that’s crazy) and even horses, cows, and all those other smelly barn-yard animals. But I know that it’s really because she missed being around me all day. Can you blame her – have you seen me?”

Off leash dog parks, whether privately or publicly owned, are maintained by volunteers. All dog parks require that users pick up after their dogs so that all park users can enjoy a clean a safe environment. Please remember to bring your own plastic doggie waste bags and dispose of them properly.

Park Guidelines

• Pet owners accept full responsibility for themselves, their pets, and their children.
• Dogs are to be leashed while entering and exiting the park.
• Dogs in heat should be left at home.
• Puppies and dogs are to be vaccinated and healthy.
• Dogs are to be kept under close supervision of their owners.
• Leash your dog in the park at the first sign of aggressive behavior.
• . . . and please, pick up after your dog.

Ala Wai K-9 Playground is presently located on the softball/soccer field of the Ala Wai Community Park adjacent the Ala Wai canal at the end of University Avenue.

Bark Park, an off-leash dog park at Diamond Head Rd. and 18th Avenue, open during daylight hours every day.

Moanalua Dog Park, the City’s first off-leash dog park at Moanalua Community Park off Pu’uloa Road, open during daylight hours every day (except Tuesday morning closed for maintenance).
